Our PhysiciansIn order to choose a physician wisely, it is important to not only know a physician's qualifications, training and experience, but also to understand their meaning. To become Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery, a surgeon must have graduated form an accredited medical school and passed all examinations necessary to receive an unrestricted medical license. This is followed by satisfactory completion of a five-year graduate program in Orthopaedic Surgery, and the passing of a written and oral examination in Orthopaedic Surgery. In order to sit for the oral examination, The orthopaedic surgeon must be in practice a minimum of 22 months. A surgeon having successfully passed the written exam, and waiting to take the oral exam is said to be "Board Eligible". To specialize in surgery of the hand, a surgeon must undergo additional training known as a hand fellowship. This fellowship is an extra year of training which occurs after completion of a five-year residency in Orthopaedic Surgery. After completing this extensive study of hand surgery, the Orthopaedic Surgeon is eligible to pursue a "Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand". Being awarded a "CAQ" requires endorsement by the fellowship program director, peer review, experience in a minimum number of hand cases, and passing of a written examination. All physicians at North Jersey Hand Surgery are required to pursue and achieve Board Certification and be awarded the "Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand" once they become eligible.
